D'oh.  I got suckered again...

I've been trying to read a bit more, lately.  Well, read more novels, rather than internet posts.  Mostly I've been reading indy/cheap novels on my Nook.  I've read some good books.  And a few bad ones.  And also....Some romance novels.  But not by choice, but because I was tricked.  I thought I was getting a tale of high adventure, but instead the books turned out be a romance set in an adventure-y setting.

It happened first when I bought a steampunk story....which was still a decent adventure, despite the author's obvious romantic-inclinations.  But this second romance...Ug.   By the time the heroine-with-a-super-rare-super-secret-super-special power started attracting the the attentions of the second prince (and third potential love interest), I was really getting fed up.  I really doubt I'll be finishing the series.  And if the heroine meets a fourth love interest, I may not even finish the book.

Interestingly, I've been having similar problems with Netflix.  Not in that I keep finding romance....But that I keep finding crap.  On one notable weekend, I started, and quickly gave up on, four separate action movies.  Then I gave up and chose a children's movie.  Which...wasn't half bad.  The movie was "The Adventurer: The Curse of the Midas Box."  It was sort of like Indiana Jones, only starring a quiet teenager, set in Victorian England, with a fraction of the action scenes.  Okay, it wasn't great.  But I liked the cast, and it was more enjoyable than the previous movies I tried...

Well, here's to a future with better entertainment!

Fantasy Sketch: Islander Elf Guard by ArchiCrash
Fantasy Sketch: Islander Elf Guard
An Elf greets you and welcomes you to her tropical island village!

...Okay, maybe 'welcomes' isn't the right word...

Fantasy Sketch: Queen of the Beach by ArchiCrash
Fantasy Sketch: Queen of the Beach
An Elf in skimpy-yet-fancy outfit introduces another Elf in a just-as-skimpy but even-more-fancy outfit.  Are these ladies a part of some royal harem?  Or are they royalty themselves, and choose to dress this way because they live in a tropical paradise, and consider this the height of fashion?

I think I'm going to choose the latter, because it offers so many goofy story and sketching possibilities...

Fantasy Sketch: Dwarven Back Gate by ArchiCrash
Fantasy Sketch: Dwarven Back Gate
A Dwarven guard stands watch at an entrance to the mountain stronghold.  ...A very small entrance, that's only big enough for a single dwarf, or a short Human.  ...That's on a crumby side of the mountain.  Think of this as the stronghold's emergency exit, or something along those lines.

Yeah, this scene only exists because I drew a character, then sketched in a background behind him.

Fantasy Sketch: Reins on a Reindeer by ArchiCrash
Fantasy Sketch: Reins on a Reindeer
A medeval man leads a reindeer through a forest.

This is what happens when I practice drawing animals; (and boy, do I need practice!) first I sketch the animal, and then if it isn't too horrible to look at, I sketch in a scene around it.  Because life is more fun with whole scenes....
